Putting off writing today? Got lots of work to do--like that pile of dishes in the sink that has to be done right this minute before you can start your novel or the next chapter of your book? And then, after the dishes are done, the floor really could use a mopping...oh, and you need to get over to the grocery store for that sale item you need right away.
I guess this just wasn't a good day for your writing--again.
Let go of the "busy" work---its a form of procrastination. Ask "why" you feel more compelled to do the dishes or mop the floor... or why you feel the sudden need, after 2 years, to clean the top of the cabinets or wash the curtains, than you do to sit down and write.
A friend of mine once said long ago in a kitchen far away when she was torn between going out for lunch with friends or staying home to clean, "those dishes aren't going anywhere, they'll still be waiting for me until I get to them"--and off she went, without even a twinge of guilt, to enjoy time with friends.
What are you afraid of?
Procrastination, aka "writer's block" is based on fear. Steven Pressfield, author of the War of Art, tells us that it goes beyond fear. That chronic procrastination is actually a force that he calls "Resistance."
Resistance aims to kill. Its target is the epicenter of our being: our genius, our soul, the unique and priceless gift we were put on earth to give
Steven Pressfield
Acknowledge it, face it, and plow through it by taking action at the keyboard or with pen and paper. Take control of your time and your talents. Resistance backs down when you take consistent, courageous action. Then, like magic, assistance (or your muse) shows up.
Then, after a few productive hours of writing, get to work washing those dishes--they're not going to clean themselves, you know.
